We recently completed a striking stone wall rebuild as part of a driveway enhancement project set in the scenic countryside on the Herefordshire and Worcestershire borders. This wasn’t just any garden feature – it was a substantial retaining wall, designed to support changes in ground level while providing a visually impressive welcome to the property.
50 metres of handcrafted sandstone walling
The new retaining wall stretches an impressive 50 metres along the edge of the client’s driveway. Using high-quality Forest of Dean sandstone sourced from Monument Quarry, our goal was to complement a small existing section of natural stone walling on the property. The result is a seamless continuation that feels completely at home in its rural setting.
Each individual stone was dressed and cropped by hand, then laid using a traditional mortar mix to ensure a strong and enduring structure. This approach allowed us to maintain a classic, rustic look while also guaranteeing the structural integrity required for a retaining wall of this scale.
Finished with durable natural stone copings
To protect and finish the wall, we sourced 40mm thick natural stone copings from Black Mountain Quarries. These copings don’t just add a clean, polished finish – they also help prevent water ingress and frost damage, improving the wall’s longevity and performance over time. Their subtle contrast adds definition and sharpness to the overall look, making the wall a standout feature as visitors arrive at the property.
